Book Launch Special Announcement | Sustainable Content #7.5

It's book launch day!

If real estate is all about location, then surely a sustainability-themed book launch is all about timing, right?

* looks at November 2024 calendar, laughs weakly*

Jokes aside, here's the thing: lately, I think many of us are looking for an avenue for hope, something that we can latch onto and say, "I can't fix that (gesturing at... well, everything), but this is in my lane. I can make progress here."

Sustainable Content: How to Measure and Mitigate the Carbon Footprint of Digital Data is a how-to book. It talks about how sustainability metrics align with usability improvements, reduce environmental and financial costs of content, and boost audience satisfaction. And because it aligns with all of these other necessary business and content metrics, it's something that's already within our control.

Let me tell you, it has been a long ride to get here. It doesn't actually seem real. For those of you who have offered support and humor since my first contract with A Book Apart 2.5 years ago, I thank you. And for the rest of you: welcome! I'm really glad you're here.

If you would be so kind: share this information with your networks. It would mean a lot to me. And if you forward this to someone wants to sign up for this newsletter, here is the link to do that.

"Sustainable content is usable content. It’s clear, concise, and compelling. We don’t need special permission. We don’t need a sustainability-friendly boss. We just need conscientious content strategy, effective content design, and our arsenal of best practices."

Where can I find Sustainable Content?

The short answer is that Sustainable Content (ISBN-13: 9781632998828) is available wherever books are sold. The longer answer is to follow the links below.

While I generally encourage independent booksellers, there’s no denying that Amazon sales and positive Amazon reviews drive downstream traffic and have the most influence on getting the sustainable content message out there, and pushing the book to bestseller status. I leave the decision up to you.

Shameless self-promotion of my own stuff

Hey, if you can't promote your own stuff on book launch day, when can you?

I've opened my calendar for training, speaking, and consulting engagements starting in mid-January 2025. This entire project is about getting the word out there to help us use our leverage for emissions reductions at work. To paraphrase Lao Tsu, I’m trying to teach your team to fish. I want to make sure that this becomes just one aspect of content best practice, and I need your help to spread the word in organizations, conferences, podcasts, and newsletters.

Is your bank funding fossil fuels? We're in the process of selling our home this week, coincidentally at the same time that our mortgage lender decided to sell our loan. This has caused dramatic and ridiculous consequences, and no end to my stress. But even if we hadn't been in a high-drama situation, I would have been pissed off. The loan was sold to JPMorgan Chase — a top financier of fossil fuel investments. This is incredibly frustrating, because borrowers really don't have any say in who...

Finding things to be thankful for It's Thanksgiving week here in the United States. It's also a week after the COP 29 U.N. climate conference meetings in Baku, Azerbaijan. November has been a fraught month for climate folks, and many are approaching the end of the year with an air of defeat. What could we possibly have to be thankful for? I am thankful for you. I think that my readers are curious people who believe in stepping up where we can. And that's important. I have a little anecdotal...

"What happens now?" Book launch day has come and gone, and with lots of help from all of you, Sustainable Content became an Amazon #1 bestseller. I am stunned and humbled. Thank you for your support. Also, I highly recommend writing a book if you want to reconnect with people you've lost touch with. It was great to hear from everyone. Most of the launch-adjacent conversations came around to the same basic theme: Given the future of the U.S. government and the expected rollback of a variety of...
